JOHN NORMYLE
My DesignPhilosophy
I am a professional designer who has been working (and living) in Paddington since 1974.
My design objectives are to offer an interior and
Architectural design service catering for new houses, renovations and refurbishments of Terrace houses and Older houses with character that needs to be retained, in some cases restored and yet be modernised with functional kitchens that really work and bathrooms that are genuinely pleasant to use.
My emphasis is on capturing the magical quality of the light and lifestyle that makes us all want to live on the Eastern Seaboard or in its beautiful hinterland.
I am a classicist and believe in the quality of pure and natural materials, yet I love Modernist design.
I work with a team who has intimate knowledge of relevant planning legislation to get your project approved through Council or through Private Certifiers.
My whole career has been in detailed heritage renovation of period houses around Sydney and especially in the Paddington Heritage Conservation Area (HCA). I have been a resident of Paddington since 1974 and have been authentically restoring my own properties in the area.
We have a good working relationship with most councils in Sydney particularly, Mosman Council, Woolhara Council, and Randwick Council. With complex development applications, it is sometimes useful to have a pre DA application meeting.

We can produce standard Heritage Conservation Reports which are an accurate (depending on old records etc)
and detailed history of a house and where it fits into the scheme of heritage importance in its context - street, suburb setting etc.For more detailed or sophisticated appraisals for Court challenges etc., we can arrange specialist professional consultants to work on our projects.
Design style
My emphasis is on capturing the magical quality of the light and lifestyle that makes us all want to live on the Eastern Seaboard or in its beautiful hinterland.
I aim to create clean modern design in the surrounds of carefully conserved and detailed heritage buildings. I am a classicist and believe in the quality of pure and natural materials, yet I love Modernist design.
Polished boards, white walls or conversely strong primary and natural materials are important to give the quality this very expensive real estate requires today. Kitchen /family living areas are very important to the way we live today, and being an ardent cook, I demand that kitchens I design will work like a professional kitchen would.

OUR STORY
a paddington journey
This is my journey through Paddington. A stroll through time and space. These are the beautiful terrace houses that I have prepared design plans for during my time in Paddington. Most of the projects involved renovations and additions in Paddington Heritage Conservation Areas.
OUR PROJECTS
Commercial
We have done interior design for advertising agencies, creative firms, head hunting firms, call centers, cafes and book shops. Often these have been in heritage buildings where the modern fit outs have had to seamlessly fit in with the existing. It is exciting to work with commercial clients and their input helps create lots of new design expression in materials and finishes.
OUR PROJECTS
Interiors
Some of the photos in the website show works that were done 25 years ago and still carry the clean line of fine design. Clean white spaces filled with beautiful simple, ancient pieces of primitive furniture are my style of design. Beautiful art always lifts a clean space. It can be a modern space with classic art, classic space with modern art - all things apply to different spaces.
OUR PROJECTS
Residential
Frank Lloyd Wright always oriented his houses around the hearth and I feel that the centre of the house is the living and eating area so it was with the fireside and hearth for our ancestors. Every house is different and each clients requirements are individual. We like to work with clients on a sequential basis to create something special for them using our skills at interpreting what is possible for the house and also the clients needs.
OUR PROJECTS
Rural
I have a great love for the Australian country. I have built a small cabin and barn on 100 acres with two kilometers of Snowy River frontage in the Snowy Mountains high country. This I have built myself with friends. It is totally self sustainable yet in keeping with the late 19 th century country vernacular of the area.
OUR PROJECTS
Heritage
Whilst a Councillor and Deputy Mayor on Woollahra Council I was on the committee that drafted the first Heritage Development Control Plan ever devised for the Paddington area. This allowed a controlled but practical way in which creative development that had strong heritage sympathy could be allowed, thus protecting the Heritage Conservation area.
